Spruce Up Your Kitchen Inexpensively With A Tile Backsplash

You want to give your kitchen a new look but can’t afford the cost or time involved in a major renovation. Consider installing a backsplash. Backsplash is simply a vertical extension of a countertop, but the look it creates is amazing.

Aside from being aesthetically pleasing, a backsplash functions to prevent damage to your walls from splattering water or grease and from objects being pushed into the wall like kitchen gadgets or knives.

Tiles

Backsplash tiles come in countless styles and materials. From ceramic, glass, and porcelain to granite, marble, stone, or metal, textured or smooth, natural or manmade, there’s a tile for every need.

The tiles come in a variety of shapes and sizes as well. Brick, hex, square, or numerous more exotic shapes, small, large and in between, as well as patterns made with different shapes and materials.  From classic to chic, simple to extravagant, there’s a tile to fit your style.

Tiles come in nearly any colour you can imagine or implement combinations of colours to complement any taste or décor.

Grout

Grout is the substance used to fill the lines and spaces between the tiles.  It is also available in a variety of colours to contrast or compliment the tile and create the effect you desire.  Imagine a wall of white subway tile with white grout.  This is a simple, clean, classic look. Imagine the same white subway tile with black, red, or blue grout. Now, you have achieved a modern, edgy, eclectic look. The possibilities are limited only by your imagination.

Upkeep

Upkeep on your tile backsplash depends upon the type of material you choose. Vitreous (slick surfaced) tiles require a simple wipe with a damp cloth. A mild non abrasive cleanser can be used. Marble, granite and other smooth rock finishes are not stain proof, but if treated properly can be resistant. Dry the spill immediately, then wipe with a damp cloth or use a mild non abrasive cleanser. Raw stones can be more difficult to maintain as their surface will actually ‘drink’ a spill. You should never use abrasive cleaners, chemicals, or steel wool on tiles.

Pricing

Pricing on tiles varies as much as the type, shape, material, and colour. They can range from a few dollars per square foot for simple ceramic to hundreds of dollars per square foot for more exotic shapes and materials.

The most difficult part of installing a tile backsplash will likely be choosing the tile, pattern, colours, and materials that will fit your taste and lifestyle the best.
